Free speaker series brings international perspectives to Lakeland campus

Lakeland Community College invites students and the community to attend a series of special events designed to broaden international awareness and cultural understanding. Each event features a distinguished guest speaker and includes refreshments or cuisine related to the topic. The series takes place throughout the fall 2024 semester, sponsored by Lakeland’s Center for International Education.

"This event series offers a unique enrichment opportunity for both our students and the wider community,” says James DeMonte, English professor and director for Lakeland’s Center for International Education. “By bringing in experts from various fields, we're opening windows to the world, fostering global awareness and promoting cross-cultural understanding right here on our campus."

Events and speakers in this series include:

  • Postcards from the Borderlands, Sept. 25, 2024
    • Featuring Dr. David Mould, Professor Emeritus, Ohio University, this event includes a discussion of Dr. Mould's new book, exploring his extensive travels and work in international development. Traditional South Asian cuisine will be served.

  • Literary Translation: A Reading & Discussion, Oct. 1, 2024
    • Featuring poets Dr. Juan Rojas and Paula J. Lambert, this event includes readings and discussions of transborder poetry with two accomplished poets. Light refreshments will be served.

  • "Am I Fractured or Am I Whole?," Oct. 9, 2024
    • Featuring Dr. Mayagul Satlykgylyjova Fenty, Associate Dean of Advising, Case Western Reserve University, this event relays the personal account of Dr. Fenty's educational journey between Turkmenistan and the United States. Traditional Turkmen cuisine will be served.

  • Russian Food Culture, Oct. 23, 2024
    • Featuring Dr. Angela Brintlinger, Professor of Russian Literature, Ohio State University, this event will examine Russian literature and food history by a renowned Slavic studies expert. Traditional Russian cuisine will be served.
  • Traditional & Popular Music of Central Asia and the Middle East, Dec. 2, 2024
    • Featuring Dr. Mehrenegar Rostami, Ethnomusicologist, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, this event will explore music festivals and traditions across Central Asia and the Middle East. Santur performance will be included.

ABOUT LAKELAND’S CENTER FOR INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION
Lakeland Community College is committed to preparing students to live and work in a global society and economy.

The center for international education is the main clearinghouse for the planning, development and administration of programs to establish multicultural awareness on campus and in the nearby community. It serves as a channel of communication between Lakeland Community College and institutions abroad and fosters academic cooperation with individuals and organizations.

Lakeland Community College offers an international studies certificate that provides students with a broad base of understanding of the many influences that affect the modern world and global economies. Subject areas include history, politics, geography, economics, religion and languages. Courses can transfer to other colleges as general education credits. Certain courses further transfer into Cleveland State University's International Relations major. Students should consult with the Counseling Center before registering for classes.
