Lakeland Civic Orchestra seeks new members

Posted: July 17, 2017

The Lakeland Civic Orchestra, a full symphony orchestra housed at Lakeland Community College, announces openings for new members of the orchestra for the 2017-2018 season.

Specific areas of need for the coming season are on all stringed instruments (violin, viola, cello and bass), and percussion. Musicians who play woodwind and brass instruments are encouraged to audition, but may not be immediately offered a regular position.

Interested musicians will be auditioned by appointment, and should be prepared to sight-read and play a prepared selection best demonstrating their abilities.

The orchestra performs four concerts annually, and rehearses Monday evenings on Lakeland’s main campus from August through May. Concerts for fall 2017 are scheduled Sunday, Nov. 5, and Monday, Dec. 10.

Orchestra members come from many different backgrounds, from passionate amateurs to professional musicians seeking additional performance opportunities, and from ages 14 to 80. Lakeland students may earn one college credit per semester for their participation.

Repertoire reflects the varied interests of the musicians and community, and ranges from the traditional orchestral repertoire to contemporary music and popular selections. The orchestra’s schedule for 2017-2018 includes music by Mozart, Beethoven, Copland and Cleveland composer Margaret Brouwer. In addition, the orchestra will perform concertos with the winners of the Lakeland Young Artists Concerto Competition. All performances utilize a full orchestra of strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion.

To schedule an audition, please contact orchestra Director Dr. Matthew Saunders, at 440.525.7105 or msaunders4@lakelandcc.edu.
