Lakeland hosts record-breaking Hour of Code event, inspiring young learners

Posted: December 5, 2024

Lakeland Community College's Information Technology and Computer Science (IT&CS) department welcomed 60 students from kindergarten through eighth grade for their annual Hour of Code event Tuesday evening, marking the program's largest attendance since its inception in 2013.

The one-hour coding introduction, held from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., is part of a global movement that has reached tens of millions of students across more than 180 countries. The Hour of Code initiative, which began as a simple introduction to computer programming basics, has evolved into a worldwide celebration of computer science, supported by over 400 partners and 200,000 educators globally.

"We're thrilled to see such enthusiastic participation from our local young learners," said Sue Baker, IT&CS department chair and professor. "This record turnout demonstrates the growing recognition that coding literacy is essential for tomorrow's workforce. By introducing children to programming concepts early, we're helping them develop critical thinking skills that will serve them well regardless of their future career paths."

The program aims to demystify computer programming through engaging, hour-long activities designed for beginners of all ages. Since its launch during Computer Science Education Week in 2013, the initiative has expanded beyond its original scope to encompass various community efforts promoting computer science education.

Lakeland Community College has participated in the Hour of Code initiative annually since its inception, consistently working to broaden participation in computer science education within the local community.
