Lakeland to offer free course to students starting college

Posted: June 3, 2024

Lakeland Community College is offering a "QuickStart to College" program this summer to help incoming students prepare for college success while earning credit.

The six-week college prep option, which begins June 25, combines in-person and online instruction. Students meet on campus Tuesday mornings and complete additional coursework virtually.

"The QuickStart to College program provides an invaluable head start for incoming Lakeland students," said Bronte Billings, manager of the men's & women's center and co-instructor of the QuickStart program. "Over just six weeks, participants will gain essential skills for navigating the college experience - from understanding classroom expectations to mastering online learning and tapping into key resources Lakeland offers its students. It's a wonderful opportunity for incoming students to build confidence, find community, and prepare for academic success before their first fall semester begins."

Participants who successfully complete the program will earn one credit hour toward their degree for the First Year Experience course (FYEX 1000). Through QuickStart, students will learn what resources are available to them as Lakeland Community College students while exploring the expectations of a college classroom. Students will learn how to read a syllabus, study for college classes, make connections and learn how to succeed in online, in-person and hybrid course environments.

"QuickStart to College" is currently enrolling a limited number of students planning to attend Lakeland for the fall 2024 semester. Tuition and book costs for the QuickStart class are waived for the summer program, but students are still responsible for paying regular tuition and fees for their fall semester courses.

Interested students can call 440-525-7789, 440-525-7576 or complete the registration form to be considered for the program.
