Annual juried art exhibition returns to The Gallery at Lakeland

Posted: May 14, 2024

The 14th May Show at Lakeland Juried Art Exhibition will be on display May 16 through July 19, in The Gallery at Lakeland, located on the first floor of the D-Building on Lakeland Community College’s campus. All are welcome to attend the artist reception and awards ceremony scheduled for Thursday, May 16, from 6 to 9 p.m., where Best in Show will be unveiled in an exciting presentation.

In addition to Best in Show, there will be five juror awards presented with cash prizes for the winning artists in numerous categories.

Eighty pieces from seventy artists were accepted into this year’s exhibition. Many different mediums are represented in the collection, including embroidery, ceramics, photography, assemblage, woodworking and different styles of painting, from acrylic and pastel to oil on canvas.

The juror and prize judge for this year’s show is Laura Domencic, Executive Director of the Erie Art Museum in Erie, Pennsylvania. An accomplished artist as well as an educator, writer and curator, Domencic brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to this year’s competition. She notes in her statement, “The work submitted for the 14th May Show at Lakeland Community College is an excellent introduction to Northeast Ohio’s impressive array of artists.”

A video walkthrough of the exhibition from gallery coordinator, Mary Urbas, will soon be available for viewing on The Gallery at Lakeland’s website. For those looking to take a piece of the exhibition home, many of the works on display are available for purchase.

“There is a seamless poetry when artists are working at this level of dedication to their practice,” Domencic continues. “The multiple conversations among the works enrich each of them. I encourage you to take the time to listen.”
