Lakeland paralegal students get inside look at criminal sentencing

Posted: December 1, 2023

Lakeland Community College paralegal program students along with area high school students interested in legal careers recently attended a courthouse tour and criminal sentencing at the Lake County Common Pleas Court in Painesville.

The students listened to Judge John P. O’Donnell explain his considerations before imposing a sentence Nov. 2. They also heard perspectives from the assistant prosecutor and public defender assigned to the case. Students reviewed a summary of the offense, the defendant's plea and potential sentences ahead of time.

"This was an invaluable opportunity for students to step into the world of law and see an actual sentencing," stated Wendy J. Smither, J.D., Lakeland's paralegal program coordinator who organized the tour. "Experiencing this courtroom process firsthand gives great insight into the real-world workings of the court. This unique opportunity brought textbooks to life and enhanced our paralegal students’ understanding of criminal law."

In addition to the sentencing, students received a tour of the Lake County Courthouse and Had the opportunity to speak with Judge O'Donnell about the field of law.

The associate degree and certificate programs offered through Lakeland prepare paralegals for in-demand jobs at law firms, corporations, banks, insurance companies, government agencies and other organizations needing legal expertise. Lakeland’s paralegal program is approved by the American Bar Association.
