With the Arts at Lakeland’s fall season now in full swing, the Lakeland Civic Orchestra will keep the excitement rolling with their first concert of the season, titled “Spirit of Adventure,” Sunday, Nov. 12, at 4 p.m. in the Dr. Wayne L. Rodehorst Performing Arts Center on Lakeland’s campus.
Under the direction of Dr. Matthew C. Saunders, the 55-member orchestra will open with a performance of Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s “The Sea Hawk,” an adaptation of the Oscar-nominated score from the 1940 Errol Flynn film of the same name.
They will then move on to present the world premiere of “In the Forest,” composed by the Lakeland Civic Orchestra’s very own James Bockhoff of the contrabass section.
Following is Felix Mendelssohn’s renowned Violin Concerto, where the orchestra will be joined by accomplished violinist Alice Han, junior division winner of the Lakeland Civic Orchestra Young Artists Concerto Competition.
After a brief intermission, they will present “Ballad of a Wanderer,” composed by Jennifer Bellor, professor of music at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Inspired by the music of Bob Dylan, this will be the very first performance of her piece in Northeast Ohio.
Concluding the program is George Bizet’s “L’Arlesienne” Suite No. 1, a highly regarded audience favorite. Despite the play for which it was written having largely been forgotten, the piece itself remains a staple of the orchestral repertoire for more than 150 years.
Concert tickets can be purchased at the box office upon arrival or online at lakelandcc.edu/arts. Ticket prices are $10 for adults, $6 for Lakeland alumni, senior citizens and veterans and $2 for current Lakeland students with ID. Online purchasers should bring their order confirmation to show at the door. The Dr. Wayne L. Rodehorst Performing Arts Center is located on the first floor of the D-Building on the campus of Lakeland Community College, which is located at the I-90/State Route 306 exit. Free parking is available.
