The Lakeland Community College Center for International Education will welcome seven accomplished guest speakers to campus throughout the fall semester for both students and community members. All presentations are free and open to the public. The events are scheduled for the following:
Megan Buskey kicked off the semester’s series of events with a discussion on her recently published book, titled “Ukraine Is Not Dead Yet: A Family Story of Exile and Return.” This event was made possible through generous funding from Fox Charitable Foundation.
Dani Hedlund, CEO of The Brink Literacy Project, will host a virtual discussion through Webex on her work empowering incarcerated women within Scotland’s prison system.
Alysia Ramos, associate professor and chair of dance at Oberlin College, will present on the widespread cultural impact of Brazilian samba.
Dr. Jonathan Graham will read poetry documenting his Czech family’s immigrant experience in Southeast Ohio.
November’s events include a two-day screening of “Andor,” a film on the life of Brazilian-born Holocaust survivor Andor Stern, followed by a discussion with filmmaker Vitor Vilaverde Dias.
Dr. Samuel Adu-Poku from Youngstown State University will speak on the philosophical significance behind traditional African art.
Classically trained chef John Hadzigeorge will wrap up the series of events by discussing his Greek heritage while sharing traditional Greek cuisine. Space for this event is limited. Please visit the Center for International Education’s website to sign up.
“Lakeland’s Center for International Education and our International Studies committee is proud of this semester’s slate of presenters,” says James De Monte, Ph.D., director of Lakeland’s Center for International Education and organizer of the guest speaker series. “Each year, the center features a range of presentations, about six or seven per term, from musical performances to poetry readings, from talks with scholars and artists to lectures by historians, and much in between.”
