Lakeland’s art gallery show gives area artists the opportunity to display their talents

Posted: June 3, 2019

For a decade now, Lakeland Community College has been the host of an esteemed art show and juried competition for regional artists. The “10th Annual May Show at Lakeland Juried Art Exhibition” is up in The Gallery at Lakeland through July 12. The gallery is located on the first floor of the D-Building, on the college’s campus at 7700 Clocktower Drive, Kirtland.

For the exhibition, artists submitted their artworks to a guest juror for acceptance into the show, and then the juror awarded prizes, including Best in Show. This year, 509 pieces were submitted for consideration, with 91 pieces by 71 artists accepted. The diverse collection of artworks includes oil, encaustic, acrylic and watercolor painting, drawing, pastel, mixed media, assemblage art, ceramics, sculpture, wood, photography, fiber, printmaking and jewelry/metals, created by accomplished visual and fine art artists of Northeast Ohio and surrounding areas.

The judge for the exhibition this year was Mary Gray, former director of the Ohio Arts Council’s Riffe Gallery in Columbus and veteran of over 150 exhibitions and juried shows.

This year, cash prizes amounted to $4,300, and in its history, a total of over $41,000 in cash prizes have gone to gifted local and regional artists who have participated in this exhibition.
