47th Annual Lakeland Jazz Festival features the Ralph Moore Quartet, a tribute to John Coltrane and a Big Band Matinee

The Lakeland Jazz Festival, the oldest jazz festival in the State of Ohio, will celebrate its 47th year March 15-17, 2019, in the Dr. Wayne L. Rodehorst Performing Arts Center in the D-Building on Lakeland’s main campus at 7700 Clocktower Drive, Kirtland, 44094.
The festival headliner is the Ralph Moore Quartet with their tribute to legendary jazz great John Coltrane. The concert is slated for Saturday, March 16, at 8 p.m. As a special treat, the quartet will hold a pre-concert discussion for ticket holders from 7-7:45 p.m. hosted by WCPN radio host Dan Polletta. Tickets are $20 for general admission and $10 for students.
On Sunday, March 17, at 4 p.m., the Lakeland Civic Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of Dave Sterner, will combine with the Duquesne University Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Mike Tomaro, for a Big Band Matinee. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $7 for students

The festival also presents a unique opportunity to the jazz education community in Northeast Ohio, whereby middle and high school jazz bands and ensembles perform for adjudication. About Ralph Moore Quartet
Ralph Moorehas been a heavyweight in the jazz world for decades, performing and recording with legends such asDizzy Gillespie, Horace Silver and Freddie Hubbard, as well as releasing several albums of his own to great acclaim.Moore was also a member of the band performing on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” for 15 years. Joining him, are the all-star rhythm section of former Wynton Marsalis bass player Rodney Whitaker, Grammy Award-winning pianist Xavier Davis, and up and coming drummer Sean Dobbins.

The festival was founded by retired professor and music department Chair Charles M. Frank. Lakeland's Jazz Festival has remained true to its original mission of instilling the excitement and magic of jazz education to the younger generation of musicians. Over 30,000 middle and high school musicians from throughout the state have participated in the festival in celebration of this uniquely American art form, jazz.
