WHAT'S HOT!

Text messaging program for all new, first-time college students

Lakeland is introducing Success Texting@Lakeland, a text messaging program designed and implemented by Persistence Plus. Use of this service at Lakeland to enhance college completion and student success is made possible by a grant from Jobs for the Future. The SuccessTexting@Lakeland program will be personalized per student and apply the latest research on college completion and course success to help students stay focused and motivated.

Each semester newly registered, first-time students will receive text messages, some of which will be questions. The more questions the student answers, the more personalized the service will become. Research has shown that students at other colleges and universities who have used this service stay connected to campus and have a successful start to their courses.

The college launched this program with a pilot group of students at the end of June. All newly registered fall students have been entered into the program before fall semester began. They received an email prior to the start of classes explaining the program. Students can end the service by opting out. Standard local SMS fees apply when a student responds.

For more information, contact Bill Kraus, associate provost for enrollment management.

QUOTE OF THE MONTH

"Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world." -Harriet Tubman

DID YOU KNOW...

Labor Day

The first observance of Labor Day is believed to have been a parade of 10,000 workers on Sept. 5, 1882, in New York City, organized by Peter J. McGuire, a Carpenters & Joiners Union secretary. By 1893, more than half the states were observing a "Labor Day" on one day or another, and Congress passed a bill to establish a federal holiday in 1894. President Grover Cleveland signed the bill soon afterward, designating the first Monday in September as Labor Day.
