SPOTLIGHT

45th Lakeland Jazz Festival

The college invites you to attend the 45th Lakeland Jazz Festival - the oldest jazz festival in the state of Ohio. The festival draws noted artists from all over the country to celebrate this uniquely American art form. This year, the festival runs March 17-19 with the Saturday night concert honoring the music of jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie on the centenial anniversary of his birth. The concert includes three members from Dizzy's bands.

In addition to the concerts, the festival offers a unique opportunity for area middle and high school jazz bands. Titled "Serving the Schools," this part of the festival gives bands the chance to perform in front of renown adjudicators and receive feedback. It's an educational experience that enables students to learn how to refine their skills from experts in the field of jazz music. The school performances are scheduled Friday, March 17 and Saturday, March 18 and are free and open to the public. Visit lakelandcc.edu/jazzfestival for performance times.

Another aspect of the educational line up is the opportunity for students and community members to participate in a free clinic provided by the headlining artist or artists. The clinic is designed to provide personal instruction and tips in jazz performance. The clinic this year is offered Saturday, March 18 at 4 p.m. in the Dr. Wayne L. Rodehorst Performing Arts Center.

THEATRE PERFORMANCES

"The Bridges of Madison County"

From the best-selling novel by Robert James Waller

Music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown

Book of the musical by Marsha Norman

Directd by Dr. Martin Friedman

Tony Award-winning play, Northeast Ohio local premier

Performance dates: Feb. 3, 4, 10, 11, 17 and 18 at 7:30 p.m.; and Feb. 5, 12 and 19 at 2 p.m.

This play is the second theater production written by Jason Robert Brown presented this year at Lakeland. The story, set on a quiet farm in America’s heartland, is about an Italian war bride who is living life as an average Iowan housewife until a National Geographic photographer knocks on her door. He is seeking directions to the area’s historic bridges and he needs her help to find them. As they travel to the various locations for the photo shoots, an unexpected, yet powerful connection grows. And so begins a sweeping romance between soul mates that ultimately leads to the struggle between longing and commitments. It begs questions about the roads we travel, the doors we open and the bridges we dare to cross.

Be swept away...

Tickets are $15 for adults, $13 for seniors and $7 for students. Tickets can be purchased by calling 440.525.7134 or online at lakelandcc.edu/arts.
