Lakeland Community College is on the ballot this Nov 3 asking Lake County voters to approve Issue 6.

Issue 6 is a 0.4 mill bond issue to expand and renovate Lakeland's Health Technologies Building, update science and biotechnology labs, and make other needed infrastructure improvements.

By 2020, it is projected that there will be over 26,000 new healthcare jobs in Northeast Ohio. Studies predict a nursing shortage as our population ages. Lakeland's nursing and other applied health technology programs are currently at capacity, with 400 students waiting to get started.

Issue 6 will allow Lakeland to:

• Provide up-to-date labs and classrooms so students are trained on the emerging technical skills they need to be job-ready.
• Expand classroom and lab space so that waiting lists can be reduced and more nursing and healthcare students can enter those programs.
• Add new programs in high-demand careers such as physical therapy and occupational therapy assisting.
• Relocate student services and parking to the north side of campus where most students enter the college.

Lakeland's renovation will create hundreds of construction jobs and pump money into the local economy. The bond issue costs only $14 per year per hundred thousand dollars of property value. None of the money will go to salaries or operating expenses.

For nearly 50 years, Lakeland has prepared over 30,000 graduates for great careers. Now, Issue 6 will allow Lakeland to prepare future generations for the jobs of the future.

Celebrate Dia de los Muertos

Experience a Celebration of the Art and Culture of Mexico.
What started as an exhibition featuring 18 artists in 2009 has grown and this year boasts over 80 international, national, regional, and local artists exhibiting works in a variety of media including: Oil/ Acrylic/Encaustic Painting, Textiles/Fiber, Printmaking, Drawing, Photography, Digital Art, Sculpture, Glass, Wood, Ceramics and Ceramic Sculpture, Mixed Media, Assemblage Art and Jewelry.

Dia de los Muertos invites the participant to acknowledge the fact that death is a constant companion from birth, an accepted friend to be joked and played with, perhaps because of the ironic foreknowledge of the fatal reality.

What was once reserved as a quasi logo for pirates and poison labels, skulls have taken over America’s pop culture. Latin American artists were creating Mexican skull art for the “Day of the Dead” - El Dia de los Muertos traditionally celebrated Nov. 2 - long before heavy metal bands used skulls on album artwork and fashion designers emblazoned their textiles. “It’s about embracing life and death and our mortality,” said Mary Urbas, Lakeland Art Gallery coordinator, exhibit curator, and life-long collector of skull art and artifacts.

Come celebrate worldwide GIS Day, Lakeland's Geospatial Technology program and the incredible career opportunities available in this field.

It's a day to discover and learn about the benefits of GIS and showcase how it touches our lives. Come to campus and take in a few of the many activities:

• Visit the geospatial technology lab
• Presentations on mobile mapping
• Presentations on unmanned aerial surveillance and 3D data modeling
• View exhibits and demonstrations from area agencies and business professionals who use GIS
• Free food and refreshments

Guests can let their hearts glow and emotions flow at the fall concert series at Lakeland. It will be a grand time to reminisce and reflect as the music takes listeners through a journey into the best of the past. On the schedule is a treat of traditional and patriotic songs, a tribute to the undeniable king of the Rat Pack, and a warm visit to Christmas songs from long ago.

Concerts are held in the Dr. Wayne L. Rodehorst Performing Arts Center in Building D on Lakeland's campus.
