Get to Know the Women's Center Staff: Diane Mull
Diane has been working in the Women's Center for 18 months. As a theater major in college, she brings a wide variety of interesting work experiences to this job, from actress to educator. In the Women's Center, she spent the summer tirelessly working to help women overcome any barriers they might have, so they could enroll in college classes. She is now supporting those same women through the semester, offering practical assistance and personal encouragement so that they will successfully complete their classes, which has become much more difficult due to covid 19.
Diane is also a wife and the mother of four children who are all in school, so she can relate first hand to the balancing act that women must perform. She understand that the challenges of raising children has become exponentially more difficult, now that we are in a pandemic. She expresses great admiration for our students who are attending classes, working, raising kids and handling everything that these roles require.
Diane's contact information is at the end of the newsletter. Please look it up and reach out!
What does the women's center do?
You get this newsletter, and you might take a peek, but you could still be wondering what we do, right? Mostly, we are simply here for you. We spend our time interacting with students! Since covid has reduced our in-person time, we use our telephones to call and text. We also use webex. The Women's Center staff has had nearly 600 interactions with students since the beginning of the semester!
School related topics we address with students include academics, the classroom experience, math, financial aid, admissions or registration.
In addition, we also assist students when their life begins to interfere with their education. This could include things like finances, physical or mental health or even family matters. Employees of the Women's Center are not mental health professionals, but we use our extensive experience to live up to our mission - providing resources, connections and support to women who want to broaden their horizons and make changes in their lives!

Why does the Women's Center encourage voting so vigorously?
It matters who our public officials are! We understand that those in office have an impact on the policies and laws that affect the lives of women, for better or for worse!
The League of Women Voters in Lake County conducted interviews for each candidate running in our county. Click below and scroll through each position to read the candidate questionnaires and see their interviews.
If you want to vote in person, you can go to the board of elections office early or go to the polls on November 3. If it's your first time, be sure to tell the clerk. Everyone will be happy to help you!
You can use an absentee ballot and mail it in or drop it off at the board of elections or an official ballot box.
For more information, use the button above and contact the board of elections for your county. The Women's Center is also a voter assistance station. Contact us with any questions. Glane@lakelandcc.edu
Book Club: Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi
It's really hard for students to read for pleasure, but if you are going to read one book this year, make it this one!
One of Oprah’s Best Books of the Year and a PEN/Hemingway award winner, Homegoing follows the parallel paths of these sisters and their descendants through eight generations: from the Gold Coast to the plantations of Mississippi, from the American Civil War to Jazz Age Harlem. Yaa Gyasi’s extraordinary novel illuminates slavery’s troubled legacy both for those who were taken and those who stayed—and shows how the memory of captivity has been inscribed on the soul of our nation.
Discussion is Tuesday, October 20, 12 noon - 1 pm.
Email Gloria at glane@lakelandcc.edu and she will forward you the webex link for the discussion.
How's Your Math Class Going?
If you want ongoing tutoring and support for your math class, join our Women's Math Empowerment and Tutoring Group. If you are in any math class between Math 0745 and Math 1650, this group is for you! Math tutor extraordinaire Christy Blasier will help you develop confidence, as you gain the skills you need to pass.
All you have to do is click the links below to join any time. These groups will take place every week all semester. You can join any time but the best time is to join now - whether or not you have become frustrated or fallen behind! Questions? Email Diane at dmull3@lakelandcc.edu

More About the Women's Center
Our Statement of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion: At the Women's Center, we celebrate the diversity of our sisterhood in age, race, gender identity, sexual orientation, ethnic and national origin, area of study, life experience and thought. We believe that a critical part of education is discovering people, practices and cultures that are new and different from what we know. One of our most important functions is to offer an opportunity for students to encounter new people and ideas, and begin to process and accept them with empathy. This is how we begin to understand that diversity and inclusion are positive attributes for our community.
We Are Here For YOU!
At the Women's Center, we are all about community and sisterhood, which makes us miss you even more during physical isolation. We look forward to the time we will be together in person again safely!
