Lakeland Community College offering Advanced English as a Second Language course

Lakeland Community College is now offering a three-credit Advanced English as a Second Language course that will run Feb. 8 to May 7.

The 12-week course will be held Mondays and Wednesdays from 2 to 3:35 p.m.

According to Lakeland, the course serves to benefit those in households where English is not the primary language spoken, or to anyone who needs to improve English-language skills to prepare for college-level classes, especially those requiring writing.

Course highlights also include:

* Learning proper sentence, paragraph and essay structure; principles of grammar and mechanics; and revising and editing techniques.

* Writing assignments will include paragraphs and short essays

* Practice listening to lectures in English and taking notes

* Develop reading comprehension skills, vocabulary, and speaking and pronunciation skills.

The cost for the course is $413.40 for Lake County residents. Additional fees may apply.

A limited amount of grant funding is available from the Lakeland Foundation in the amount of $300 toward the course cost for each of the first six students who register.

The deadline to register is Feb. 3.
