CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Lakeland Community College is offering a “learning concierge” for students taking classes remotely, who will answer questions about the nuances of online learning.
Like many other schools, Lakeland will offer a hybrid course schedule this fall. About 60% of classes will be online, according to a news release from the community college. The program is supported by a $75,000 grant from KeyBank.
“Data shows that there is often a difference between the success rates of students in the traditional classroom when compared to the success rates of remote learning students,” executive vice president and provost Laura Barnard said in a news release. “Remote learners have been less likely to reach their course completion goals but we are hoping to change that.”
The college also launched a series of instructional videos, detailing how to use online content and communication system Blackboard and tips from professors on how to interact online.
Lakeland will start with one concierge and potentially expand the program, Barnard wrote in an email. Students can communicate through email or phone. Some of the common questions associated with online learning that the concierge can answer include:
-- how to submit assignments online
-- how to communicate with professors and other students
-- how to find grades
-- how to organize time when falling behind in online learning
For students who have problems with access to devices or the internet, the concierge will direct them to Lakeland’s help desk, which will work with them on technology.
“Lack of funds for technology will not be a barrier for students taking remote learning courses,” Barnard wrote.
