Kathy Skerritt, “Life Force Descending 2” - Mixed media on canvas
The Gallery at Lakeland celebrates Women’s History Month, presenting “from Woman XV… Created by women, of women and about women,” through April 1, 2022, in the Gallery at Lakeland located on the first floor of the D-Building on Lakeland Community College’s campus, at 7700 Clocktower Dr., Kirtland, Ohio, 44094. All shows are free and open to the public.
This year the featured artist is Kathy Skerritt, who lost her battle with cancer a few months ago.
“I wanted to pay homage to her talent and sensitivities as a visual artist and poet,” said Mary Urbas, exhibition curator and gallery coordinator. “Kathy and her work impacted artists in Northeast Ohio and beyond, on so many levels.”
Urbas worked with Skerritt’s friend and personal archivist Kelly Pontoni to select artworks and create a mini retrospective of her mixed media artworks on canvas and paper, spanning easily 40 years. This collection also includes “The Breast Chronicles” which was Skerritt’s last body of work. Skerritt passed before she ever saw them exhibited together. The large open space as you first walk into The Gallery at Lakeland will be dedicated to her art.
“from Woman XV…” showcases 36 local and regional women artists from Northeast and Central Ohio, Georgia, Indiana, South Carolina and Oregon. They will exhibit works created in a diverse variety of media including: oil, acrylic, drawing and collage, textiles, weaving, glass mosaic, bronze sculpture, ceramic sculpture, assemblage art, mixed media, printmaking and photography.
An artist reception will be held Sunday, March 13, 2022, from 3:30-5 p.m. Preceding the artist reception will be the 29th annual Woman of Achievement awards hosted by Lakeland Community College’s Women’s Center. The awards ceremony begins at 2 p.m.
