Lakeland Community College is now accepting applications for their new physical therapist assistant (PTA) degree program. Twenty students will be accepted per year, with the first cohort of students beginning in January 2022.
Physical therapist assistants (PTAs) provide physical therapy services under the direction and supervision of a physical therapist. PTAs implement components of patient care, obtain data related to the treatments provided, and collaborate with the physical therapist. PTAs assist the physical therapist in the treatment of individuals of all ages, from newborns to people at the end of life. Many patients have injuries, disabilities, or other health conditions that need treatment; however, PTAs also care for people who simply want to become healthier and to prevent future problems.
“We are excited to add this new, two-year degree program to our slate of health care offerings,” said Deborah Hardy, Ed.D. dean for health technologies, associate provost for teaching and learning and dean of faculty at Lakeland. “It will serve the dual needs of those looking to fulfill their calling in the field of physical therapy by assisting the physical therapist in the execution of rehabilitative treatment, as well as filling the workforce needs of our local health care agencies.”
Candidate for Accreditation status is based on the program’s demonstration of satisfactory progress toward achieving compliance with the standards and required elements by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE).
Current students who are interested in entering Lakeland’s new PTA program should contact their academic counselor to review admissions requirements into the program.
