Students in the EMT/Paramedic program learn on industry-grade ambulance and vehicle crash simulators inside the classroom.

Program currently accepting new students for August start date

The Emergency Medical Technology (EMT) and Paramedic programs at Lakeland Community College will hold an open house Monday, June 28, from 4:30-6:30 p.m., on the college’s main campus at 7700 Clocktower Drive (I-90 and Rt. 306 exit), in the H-Building, room H-216.

The free event is for those exploring occupations such as the firefighting or health care areas. Participants will learn how emergency medical technicians and paramedics may advance into related career paths. Current professionals in the field will be on hand to answer questions and provide information on EMT-Basic, fire certification, paramedic or other health care careers.

In 2018, Lakeland completed the construction of a state-of-the-art health technologies building. Students in the EMT/Paramedic program learn on up-to-date equipment and industry-grade ambulance and vehicle crash simulators.

“We encourage anyone thinking of a career as a first responder to come take a tour of the classrooms,” said Chris Fuentes, Lakeland’s EMT/Paramedic program director who is also the first Hispanic to serve in this role for the college. “Seeing the facility firsthand will really give visitors a sense of what it’s like to be in the program. Plus, myself and my colleagues are happy to speak about what drew us to the field and what makes us proud to serve in this capacity. We look forward to speaking with others about this career path.”

The State of Ohio and the Ohio Department of Higher Education recently awarded Lakeland Community College a Choose Ohio First grant to provide scholarships to students in the critical field of health care. Students in who enroll in Lakeland’s EMT/Paramedic program may be eligible. Details on how to apply will be available in the coming weeks.

Additionally, a Medical Mutual of Ohio Scholarship is available to EMT/Paramedic students through Lake Health. The deadline to apply is July 16. Instructions to apply and the application to download is located here.
