From Earth to Art: Gallery Show is All About Clay

Posted: September 21, 2018

The Gallery at Lakeland is hosting the “Made of Clay…” show Sept. 20, 2018, through Nov. 2, 2018. The gallery is located on the first floor of the D-Building on Lakeland’s main campus, at 7700 Clocktower Dr., Kirtland, Ohio, 44094. All shows are free and open to the public.

Many of the artists in this exhibition are well known in the regional clay community, with a number being alumni and teachers at local colleges and art centers. In total, 39 international, national, regional and local clay artists will exhibit works that incorporate the many different techniques of surface embellishments and various glaze applications, into ceramic art that will be hand-built, wheel thrown or sculptural in design.

“My fascination with clay,” Urbas explained…” started when I was a student at The Cleveland Institute of Art. My focus was on fiber and textile design, but I wanted to expand my horizons and experiment with new materials. I took a hand-building class with Judith Salomon and was intrigued by the alchemy, the chemistry of taking dry raw materials, adding water, creating a three dimensional object, and then firing it in a kiln. I distinctly remember that moment, during the first raku firing I participated in… pulling the red-hot piece out of the kiln, laying it in a nest of combustible materials, watching it catch fire, squelching the flames and containing the smoke. I was hooked!”

Some of the works in the show are available for purchase. Those interested in buying any of the pieces should contact Mary Urbas.
